2.2B Jungle Layers

Based on "Virgin Forest at Sunset" (1910) by Henri Rousseau.

In this lesson we look at "Virgin Forest at Sunset" and discuss the four things artist do to create depth in a picture:

  • Overlapping
  • Size
  • Color
  • Details

We transition from Art History to Art Activity with this question: "Of the four techniques artists use to create depth in a picture, which technique did Henri Rousseau employ or use the most?

Overlapping!  He used several layers to create a sense of depth in his artwork.  We also use layers of construction paper in our artwork to create a sense of depth.  View the teacher sample and student work below.  Visit our curriculum page to download the activity for your students.  There is a QR Code for the corresponding video to assist you.
