Drawing 4 Basic Forms: Cube, Sphere, Cylinder, & Cone

Over the past two days, I've learned a few helpful things when teaching this new way of seeing and drawing objects. We are moving from drawing what you see to understanding what you see. The four basic forms: cube, sphere, cylinder, and cone have tremendous power to help young artists see the world more accurately.

Here are some of the sticking points that can be resolved fairly easily:

When drawing cubes: concentrate on making your lines parallel. Try to avoid a "Connect the Dots" strategy. This leads to wonky forms that don't look accurate or substantial.
When drawing cubes, think of them as three sets of three parallel lines. Use the colors from 3D modeling and printing to reinforce this idea.
W x D x H = X axis x Y axis x Z axis
Also, chair height and table height really impact drawing freehand lines and circles. It is important to accommodate students so that they can accomplish the assigned tasks.
