God’s Heart for the Humble: An Underdog Story
“Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and shun evil.” — Proverbs 3:7
“Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited.” — Romans 12:16
“The Lord detests all the proud of heart. Be sure of this: They will not go unpunished.” — Proverbs 16:5
Today’s quiet time was a powerful reminder: the heart of God is humble. Though He holds all power, He invites us into His counsel, longs to connect with us, and delights in walking with us.
I’ve always loved underdog stories—none more than David facing Goliath. But one of my own small underdog moments still stands out from 5th grade recess.
We were playing baseball. Our teacher was the all-time pitcher. My team was down by one run in the bottom of the final inning. Two outs, runner on base, and I stepped up to bat.
(Quick note: I was never a strong hitter. I played three years of rec league baseball from ages 13–15 and recorded exactly zero clean hits. So this moment was wildly out of character.)
Two strikes came quickly. As the teacher wound up for the third pitch, a classmate in centerfield yelled, “Easy out!” Those words lit a fire. The pitch arced in slow motion. My eyes locked in, the bat felt perfect in my hands, and I swung with everything I had.
Crack. Sweet contact. The ball soared on a perfect trajectory toward centerfield. I took off for first as our baserunner rounded third. The ball descended right over my classmate. He jumped, hands high… and it slipped just over his glove.
I rounded first, then second, then third. Teammates screamed for me to run. As I barreled toward home, I saw the ball coming in low from the corner of my eye. It skipped in front of the plate and bounced up awkwardly just as I slid. Dust flew. My teacher grabbed the ball.
Safe.
My team exploded. They rushed home plate, jumping and cheering. I stood in the middle of the celebration, laughing in disbelief. Even my teacher was grinning. When the centerfielder came in, I couldn’t resist: “Easy out, huh?” He grabbed the bat and started toward me, but the teacher stepped in and calmed things down while we kept celebrating.
I’ve replayed that memory many times. It was a gift. On paper, I should have struck out. Everything in my baseball history pointed to failure. Yet in that moment, something shifted.
I’ve often wondered: Would I have hit the ball if my classmate hadn’t taunted me? I honestly don’t think so. God used that small, unlikely victory to plant a deeper truth in my young heart: there is more to life than meets the eye.
God specializes in elevating underdogs. He doesn’t look at the things people admire—skill, status, or impressive performance. He looks at the heart (1 Samuel 16:7). He blesses humility, not because humble people are more “worthy,” but because humility positions us to walk with Him.
It’s not ultimately about how talented we are (though God gives skills and talents). It’s not about our win-loss record (though He does grant victories). It’s about remembering God in everything we do and seeking Him with a humble heart.
When we lay down pride, we make room for His presence, His power, and His surprising grace—even in the middle of an ordinary recess game.
A Simple Prayer Lord, thank You that Your heart is humble. Teach us to fear You, shun evil, and walk in true humility. Help us celebrate Your work in our unlikely victories and trust You in our ordinary moments. Amen.
